TENDER FOR ACADEMIC POSITIONS IN TRANSPORTATION
AT THE INSTITUTO SUPERIOR TÉCNICO

1. In the framework of the MIT – Portugal program a public tender procedure is open, at IST – Instituto Superior Técnico, from the 4th to the 31st January 2007.
2. The objective of the tender is to select  candidates for possible contracts as Invited Assistant Professors, for the scientific area of Transport and Urban Sciences, in the following groups of disciplines:
   • Transport Policy and Planning, with special focus in  Structured Financing in Transport Systems;  
   • Transport Production and Management, with special focus on Business Innovation in Transport Systems
   • Transport Production and Management, with special focus on Technology Management in Transport Systems.
3. Up to three positions are open at 50% of full time contracts, with exclusivity. Exceptionally, two of these positions may be combined for a single contract at 100% of full time. The selected Professors will teach in a number of graduate courses, both in the MIT-Portugal program (see www.mitportugal.org/transportation) and in the other programs in which the Transport Infrastructure, Systems and Policy group is engaged. Teaching in post-graduate programs at IST can be done in English or Portuguese, with English the exclusive language of instruction of the MIT-Portugal Program.
4. The selected candidate is also expected to participate in, and progressively take responsibility for, research projects at national and international level aiming to develop a significant research stream in the area of his / her specialty. It is also possible to carry out some consultancy projects within the school structure. Personal income from these projects is possible, thus complementing the basic income from the teaching contract.
5. The basic contractual conditions for a 100% full-time contract with exclusivity are a gross annual salary of currently 42.452, 84 Euros, paid in 14 monthly salaries per year, and an additional meal allowance of 1.011,53 paid in 12 monthly allowances per year.
6. The salary corresponds to the category of “Professor Auxiliar Convidado”, according to the legally defined table for wages of professors and lecturers, corresponding to level 1, index 195, to be supported by the MIT-Portugal program.  
7. Each contractual position will be assigned on a renewable one year contract, according to the established by-law (nr 5, article 34, framework law for academic professorship careers, known as “Estatuto da Carreira Docente Universitária”), to support teaching and advanced research in the themes referred above. In any case, the contracted Professor should develop teaching and a significant research activity.
8. The place of work will be at the Departamento de Engenharia Civil e Arquitectura do Instituto Superior Técnico, Avenida Rovisco Pais, 1049-001 Lisboa.

5. Qualification requirements:

• For all positions, a PhD degree in Transport Systems or in an Engineering domain close to and applied in transport systems (typical examples are: Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrotechnical Engineering, etc).
• For position a) and b) a PhD degree in Business Management, Financing or Economics is also accepted, as long as the curricula of the candidate presents relevant professional experience in Transportation.
• Acceptability and adequacy of candidacies based on other academic titles, obtained in Portugal or elsewhere, will be subject to the evaluation of the jury, based on the candidates’ resumes.

6. Method for selection of candidates:

• Analysis of adequacy of academic background;
• Evaluation of academic and professional curriculum vitae;
• Research experience in subjects relevant to the position;
• After evaluation of the previous aspects the jury may decide on the need of a personal interview with the finalist candidates. This interview may be in person or by telecommunication.

7. Formal presentation of the candidacy:

7.1. – Candidacies should be submitted using a specific form, available at the Núcleo de Gestão de Pessoal (at IST) or downloadable from http://areapessoal.ist.utl.pt/html/formularios/ (form 31).

7.2. – Candidacy forms should be accompanied by the following documents, which can be written (or translated into in the case of b) in English or in Portuguese:

• Detailed Academic and Professional curriculum vitae;
  
• Copy of each relevant certificate of academic graduation.
  
• Two letters of recommendation
  
• Memorandum where the candidate expresses his / her interest in one of these positions and the added valued he / she hopes to bring to the institution, as well as his / her vision and plans for the scientific development of the research stream at IST in that area of knowledge (in English)

7.3. – The documentation must be submitted by registered mail or express delivery, received no later than January 31st 2008 at Núcleo de Gestão Pessoal
